Iranian Minakari, also known as Persian enamel, is a traditional art form that involves the intricate decoration of metal objects with vibrant colored enamels. The word “Minakari” is derived from the Persian word “Minoo,” meaning heaven or paradise, which reflects the beauty and richness of this art form.

Minakari has a long history in Iran, dating back to the Achaemenid period (550-330 BCE). It reached its peak during the Safavid dynasty (1501-1736) when it became an important part of court art. Today, it continues to be practiced by skilled artisans in different parts of Iran, especially in cities like Isfahan, Shiraz, and Tehran.

The process of creating Minakari involves several stages. It begins with the preparation of a metal object, usually copper or silver, which is shaped and polished to a smooth surface. Then, the design is drawn on the surface using a fine brush or pencil.

Next, a special mixture of colored powdered glass, called “Mina,” is prepared. The colors are derived from different minerals and oxides, such as copper oxide for blue, iron oxide for red, and cobalt oxide for green. The powdered glass is carefully applied to the designated areas of the design.

The object is then fired in a kiln at high temperatures, typically around 800 to 900 degrees Celsius. The heat melts the powdered glass, causing it to fuse with the metal surface. This process is repeated several times, with different colors applied and fired individually, allowing the creation of intricate and multicolored designs.

Once the enameling process is complete, the surface is polished to achieve a smooth and glossy finish. The final result is a dazzling piece of artwork characterized by its vivid colors, intricate patterns, and reflective surface.

Minakari is widely used in the decoration of various objects, including jewelry, vases, plates, bowls, and decorative tiles. The designs often feature floral motifs, geometric patterns, and scenes from nature or Persian literature. The colors used in Minakari are usually bold and vibrant, creating a visually stunning effect.
